Spatial sound

Edwin van der Heide

"This installation consists of a surface of 40 loudspeakers. The use of this number of loudspeakers in a relatively small lateral spacing creates the possibility not only to create vibrations in the air but also to control the spatial shape of the waves". Jane

Links Arduino + sensors

Regarding the practises we are gonna have next term with arduino, there are some interesting links, to see a little bit what is arduino, some sensors we can use and some ideas or examples of implementation and projects.
3. Make: Blog: Open source hardware (some examples of implementation with arduino)

You will see that the possibilities are almost infinite. At the moment there is code I think wont be easy to me, but we still having two years to do stuff.

If you search in google "arduino projects" there are a lot more ideas to understand the potential of this "tool".

Big Dog - boston dynamics robot.

Technology, my friends !
OK this may be a bit off subject, but I still find it quite amazing. It jumps, man !

And of course the cheaper version of it here
(why spend millions on something you can do by yourself, really ?)

Sanky All Of Us

So for those who were there and perhaps especially for those who weren't here is Sanky's website.  The work he showed was really fantastic!  I especially loved the panel he made which was for the patient preparation room before heart surgery.  It was a screen that was craved out of wood that had very peaceful images projected onto it and came with a remote, also wooden exterior,   in which the viewer could alter the images and play with the subjects. It was so thoughtful, right down to the use of wood which has a very non-hospital, soothing feel to it.  It took people's mind off what was about to happen which resulted in a calmer heart rate, resulting in greater survival success!

A quiet Reverie

By sound artist Mark Peter Wright
At IMT Audio Forensics

This work really grabbed my attention. I wish they had had more space though. For sound art I thought sound proofing was integral in the presentation. I was upset that the sound from the projects ran into eachother. Jane

New Ratio

Dr Simon Payne
Simon Payne is a visual artist and did his PHD at the RCA. He is a fantastically interesting chap and showed us examples of early 20th century motion graphics from Walter Ruttman, Oskar Fischinger and Len Lye at the recent Kinetic Colour event the Tate Modern. New Ratio explores the phenonmena of seeing and hearing, how the eye hears and the ear sees, sorta ☺Jane

Time - Christmas Lectures

There are series of Science Lectures always on in the UK at Christmas, mainly for kids, but I particularly remember this series, they were all about time, order, predictability, probability, etc. I don’t know about you guys but I’m no scientist, so I find it good because the Lecturer breaks down and explains some complex subjects in a simple way... see what you think. The titile link is about Chaos, but there are lots if you links further into various lectures, as they only stream in 10 minute sections. The ones below are about a general introduction to time and probabilty...

Cat Solen : "At The Bottom Of Everything"

And of course.
If you like short films, stop motion and music videos, here is a work by Cat Solen , englobing the whole.

Nagi Noda : I love Your Face

This is also very known.
It's from the regretted Japanese artist Nagi NOda.
I love her work because it generally deals with very simple and old fashion technics added to choreography.
You can find more of her work on www.uchu-country.com

D.A.N.C.E.

I'm pretty sure all of you have already seen it.
But still one of my favourite music video these last years.
This is quite simple, only using After Effects and it's also one of these works that made me want to learn more about animation.

Some links

There are two different videos that yesterdays took my attention for really different reasons.

audi vorsprung durch technik

the night driving post reminds me of the audi website, i think its using the perper version 3d(??) anyway, it's interacted with mouse.
but im alittle tired of the high technology effect now... :( get more interested at the low-tech arts, they are more aesthetic and subtle. just my opinion. here is a link of a japanese visual artist

two of his works were showing in the onedotzero, i think its really nice

Trench coat

As we talked about stop motion (and seeing the crazy cutting Mateer has done), it reminded me of this clip, all done with paper.
A beautiful way to waste time. It is close to the converse ad clip... But less "clean".

you can also watch the making of here ( the video is of much better quality, and it gives a good idea of the work done.)

Claire.

Holy Tears

Ooo I forgot about this.  Do you all remember The Eel?  The same director had another film at onedotzero which I think was a fantastic improvement...then again, aside from the ending I was one of the few people who liked The Eel!  Anyway I really like the use of narrative...it sorta goes into the playing events backward that we got into with Claire's work.  Anyway I hope you enjoy it.

Also Marc asked that we bring in projects to shoot in front of the green screen...and if I may it is someone else's turn to look a fool :)

Night Driving

Wow these posts are great!

This is an amazing project that had huge success a few years ago.  It is for Volkswagen about driving and aside from the amazing tv ad the site allows people to upload their own night dives and see other peoples and manipulate the ad and the points of view on the car.  It sounds quite simple but it is very elegant!

Mind Games

Hey Guys,

This next piece, have a look at it and play along to see what happens to you. Sumliminal Messages and power of suggestion are areas which also interest me. Let me know your views. Its an awfully done video, but it illustrates a nice point. It would be cool to twist these concepts right on their head...

Reactable

This is quite all but interesting link about a project done by the Audiovisual Institute at the Pompeu Fabra University of Barcelona.

The concept is a tactile table that works as a sound interface by using diferent physical objects representing components of modular synthesizer. Thats mean, multi users can create realtime music in a very intuitive way adding filters, modulators...

As a note, the artist Bjork borrow this instrument for her tour Volta.

Authors - users

Hi all,

I finded in the settings the possibility to add different authors (editor or user).
The only "difficulty" is that all the users must have a gmail account.

In this way, any of us can login with his user and write a post with his name.

In case someone doesn`t have a gmail email, it is quite easy create one.

Blog CSM Digital Media

Hi All,

This is a blog for the Digital Media first year students 2008 (Communication Design) at Central Saint Martins.

The idea is the same as in the CSM Digital Media Facebook:
  • share ideas
  • links
  • discussions
There are some others blog applications (ex. WordPress), with better tools (multi users...), but needs a web host (we need to pay).
I think this could be a good start.

As I think only can exist one admin, we will need to share the user (I will send it by mail). As well for be able to create this blog, I needed create a new email adress (csm.digitalmedia@googlemail.com).

Please feel free to start to publish news, projects o whatever you think could be interesting or usefull.

I will recreate the post that already are in our facebook.
